FREEMUSIC
This year marks a new cycle on our path. Twenty years is a big number, and we are grateful for this milestone. We deeply appreciate all our supporters who have been with us since day one.
Free Music was born in Almada, in August 2004. It started as the initiative of two friends who accepted the risk and decided to do something different and meaningful in the musical scene of the time. In its first three years, Free Music specialized in electronic music events, working with the best national DJs and various top international DJs such as DJ Chus, Pete Tha Zouk, Frank Maurel, D-Formation, Miss Sheila, Julian Poker, Luca Ricci, Carlos Manaça, and LuÃs Leite, just to name a few. These events were always accompanied by the best instrumentalists of the time, both in wind, string, and percussion instruments, further contributing to the success of the events.
After a period of transition and maturity, leaving electronic music behind and solidifying its place in the music scene, Free Music, between 2009 and 2015, was responsible for organizing and promoting music festivals, including Phantasticus! – The Almada International Film and Arts Festival, which combined the best of horror cinema with a broad spectrum of bands and styles, ranging from World Music to Rock and Metal. Bands like Terrakota, Kumpania Algazarra, Dead Combo, More Than A Thousand, R.A.M.P., Bizarra Locomotiva, Mão Morta, Moonspell, among others, participated in our events during this period.
Starting in 2016, Free Music cemented its position as a leading name in the production of Progressive Rock and Metal events, working with various global icons such as Leprous, Pain of Salvation, Riverside, Soen, among others. In March 2020, the venue Lisboa ao Vivo hosted the last pre-pandemic event, which marked the conclusion of Leprous' final European tour. After a 15-month hiatus forced by the Covid-19 pandemic, Free Music returned to organizing events with a double date featuring Moonspell. These two nights, which were quite challenging to implement due to the existing landscape of restrictions, including a lockdown in the city of Lisbon, were still a huge success, attended by a maximum capacity of 300 seated people per day and streamed worldwide via the live streaming partner platform Munin.live.
After 2022, as a result of growth driven by consistency and quality, Free Music began embracing events with larger-scale artists, also starting to work in bigger venues and expanding its scope to include other sub-genres of Rock and Metal. 2024 marks Free Music's 20th anniversary, and we couldn’t be more excited to show everything we’ve been working on. Stay tuned!
